Bugs, Jet Lag, Picky Eaters, oh my!

In 16 years of family travel we've faced down toddler jatlag in Germany, wondered what the heck she would eat in Senegal, and doused her in bug spray & sun screen in Costa Rica.

Tthere is so much more to think about and plan when we have a kid along on our travels. This is why I think the Smart Travel Advice section of FamiliesGo! just might be the most important content I create.

Before you head out of town this summer, benefit from some of my hard-earned wisdom. In particular:

• My latest advice post provides 4 ways to keep kids safe & healthy in the outdoors, whether the outdoors is your backyard or the rain forest.

• If you're flying, take a look at my tips for managing jet lag in kids. You can't avoid it if you're crossing time zones. But you don't have to face an exhaustion melt-down on day one of your trip.

• With my picky eater, I've learned that we can find chicken and rice pretty much anywhere in the world. And fresh fruit is readily available in more appealing ways outside the U.S. than here at home. To our surprise, we have yet to find a country where she won't eat anything. So my 4 Tips for Slipping Healthy Food into Vacation Meals are easy, practical and make up for inevitable ice cream overload.

A Word About Google & Indie Publishers

You might have noticed that your typical Google search results these days are full of forums like Reddit & Quora, low-quality "best-of" lists from review sites like Yelp, and AI Q&As that are not relevant to your query and sometimes completely wrong!

Independent publishers like me, who work hard to create accurate, honest, authoritative content, are getting pushed out of the results you see, making it harder for us us to stay in business and serve our readers and for you to get the quality information you want.

You can support FamiliesGo! by forwarding this newsletter to people who might find it useful, clicking through to booking sites and Amazon from my site (it costs the same for you, but i get a small commission), and bookmarking FamiliesGo! so you can easily find it again. And consider buying my new vacation planner (see below).

Do the same for other independent media sites that you value.

You can also show Google you're unhappy with its low-quality search results by using alternative search engines like Bing, Duck Duck Go and Ecosia.

Our Couple-Time Sojourn to Saratoga Springs Carving out time for the 2 of us Rich and I plan a getaway for the two of us any time Teen Traveler is away on her own. This summer she had the opportunity to spend three weeks in Estonia (later this fall). We had big ambitions but all we managed to make time for was a quick four-day sojourn right before she was due home. We didn't want to worry about weather or airline technical problems (hello, Delta!) delayng our flights on such a short trip. And...

This Month From FamiliesGo!Paris! How Do You Explore Paris With Kids? As we count down to the Olympic Games once again, everyone has Paris on their mind, me included. We had a great two-week stay in Paris when our child was young enough to zoom around the city on a Micro kick scooter. How do you see the most romantic city in the world with a child? You don't see much of it at night, I admit. And you balance church visits and museums with patisserie shops and city parks. Luckily Paris has...

This Month From FamiliesGo!Santorini & Rhodes, Greece Heat, Crowds & Gorgeous Greek Islands The islands of Rhodes and Santorini are two more of the stops we made on our Mediterranen Cruise on Holland America last summer. People flock to Santorini, an arid volcanic island in the Aegean sea for its white-washed villages and bright blue roofs. Here you can see a picturesque blue dome, the tranquil Aegean, and the crowds. We had hired a taxi driver for half a day, hoping he would take us to...
