Mother's Day & Father's Day

What To Get Them?

I like Mother's Day and Father's Day.

The former marks the beginning of real, reliable Spring in New York, where I live. And it makes you want to get outside and do something lovely like a take a long bike ride.

The latter tells us that school will be over soon and summer is about to start. It makes me want to go out to the backyard and grill things.

The difficulty of Mother's & Father's day is the gift-giving. What to give that will be meaningful and won't collect dust on a shelf, hang in a closet or unworn or sit on a table unread?

I think the best gift any of us can give to our family is time together.

• So for Moms, I'm offering a list of ideas for weekend getaways. You don't need to do the getaway in May; just book it and let mom set aside a weekend when you're both free.

• For Dads I'm offering a list of ideas for organized day trips that will meet a wide variety of interests.

If these particular suggestions don't suit you, maybe they'll inspire one that's perfect for you and your favorite mom or dad in the world.

Our Couple-Time Sojourn to Saratoga Springs Carving out time for the 2 of us Rich and I plan a getaway for the two of us any time Teen Traveler is away on her own. This summer she had the opportunity to spend three weeks in Estonia (later this fall). We had big ambitions but all we managed to make time for was a quick four-day sojourn right before she was due home. We didn't want to worry about weather or airline technical problems (hello, Delta!) delayng our flights on such a short trip. And...

This Month From FamiliesGo!Paris! How Do You Explore Paris With Kids? As we count down to the Olympic Games once again, everyone has Paris on their mind, me included. We had a great two-week stay in Paris when our child was young enough to zoom around the city on a Micro kick scooter. How do you see the most romantic city in the world with a child? You don't see much of it at night, I admit. And you balance church visits and museums with patisserie shops and city parks. Luckily Paris has...

This Month From FamiliesGo!Santorini & Rhodes, Greece Heat, Crowds & Gorgeous Greek Islands The islands of Rhodes and Santorini are two more of the stops we made on our Mediterranen Cruise on Holland America last summer. People flock to Santorini, an arid volcanic island in the Aegean sea for its white-washed villages and bright blue roofs. Here you can see a picturesque blue dome, the tranquil Aegean, and the crowds. We had hired a taxi driver for half a day, hoping he would take us to...
